Up threatened a big problem in Turkey. Reportedly, the government is talking about blocking the site. In fact, Turkey is a country that contributes the third largest number of users to Facebook outside the United States.
Fethi Simsek, Head of the Telecommunications Transmission Directorate of Turkey said the agency he leads have more authority to close the site, in accordance with the Law number 5651 of article 8.
The debate about Facebook was triggered by a request from Kilicdaroglu Kemal, Turkey’s opposition party leader who was attacked on up with the statement that he is a “member of the PKK”. Problems like that could be a reason to shut up.
“Facebook could be blocked if the site contains content that violates the law,” Simsek said, as quoted from AllFacebook, October 12, 2010. “Since Facebook does not eliminate the content is concerned, the government decided to block these sites,” he said.
Simsek says, sites that allow anyone to comment who insult other people, either in social media or any media, certainly do not need to be supported or allowed to operate.
However, Serhat Ozeren, Chairman of Internet Board mentions Turkey, blocking up is not necessary if the offensive content has been removed. “I myself could not find the location where the group up which states that Kilicdaroglu is a ‘member’ of the PKK,” he said.
For information, Turkey is trying to join the European Union and the need to show good achievement in human rights and civil liberties, if want to be accepted. Meanwhile, Facebook is a site that is very successful in the country which has a population of 22,943,100 inhabitants and 74 million Facebook users.
